Abyāt dar tazmīn-e-zikr-e-nafī isbāt
Verses Woven Around the Dhikr of Negation and Affirmation
بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
نَحْمَدُہٗ وَنُصَلِّیْ عَلٰی رَسُوْلِہِ الْکَرِیْمِ
Bismi'llāhi'r-Rahmāni'r-Rahīm
Nahmaduhū wa nusallī 'alā rasūlihi'l-karīm
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We praise Him, and invoke blessings on His noble Messenger.
یار رہے یارب تو میرا اور میں تیرا یار رہوں
مجھ کو فقط تجھ سے ہو محبت خلق سے میں بیزار رہوں
ہر دم ذکر و فکر میں تیرے مست ہوں سرشار رہوں
ہوش رہے نہ مجھ کو کسی کا تیرا اگر ہشیار رہوں
Yār rahe yā Rabb tū merā aur maiñ terā yār rahūñ
Mujh ko faqat tujh se ho mahabbat khalq se maiñ bezār rahūñ
Har dam zikr-o-fikr meñ tere mast hūñ sarshār rahūñ
Hosh rahe na mujh ko kisī kā terā agar hushyār rahūñ
Be You my Friend, O Lord, and I Your friend, and so forever stay;
Let all my love be Yours alone, from all creation turned away.
Drunk on Your thought at every breath, in rapture let me pass my day;
And if I wake to You alone, let every other fade away.
اب تو رہے بس تا دمِ آخر وردِ زباں اے میرے الٰہ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ
Ab to rahe bas tā dam-e-ākhir wird-e-zabāñ ai mere ilāh:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
Now till the final breath, my God, let this my tongue's one litany be:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
تیرے سوا معبودِ حقیقی کوئی نہیں ہے کوئی نہیں
تیرے سوا مقصودِ حقیقی کوئی نہیں ہے کوئی نہیں
تیرے سوا موجودِ حقیقی کوئی نہیں ہے کوئی نہیں
تیرے سوا مشہودِ حقیقی کوئی نہیں ہے کوئی نہیں
Tere siwā ma'būd-e-haqīqī koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ
Tere siwā maqsūd-e-haqīqī koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ
Tere siwā maujūd-e-haqīqī koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ
Tere siwā mashhūd-e-haqīqī koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ
Beside You, none is God in truth: there is none, there is none.
Beside You, none my Goal in truth: there is none, there is none.
Beside You, none exists in truth: there is none, there is none.
Beside You, none is Seen in truth: there is none, there is none.
اب تو رہے بس تا دمِ آخر وردِ زباں اے میرے الٰہ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ
Ab to rahe bas tā dam-e-ākhir wird-e-zabāñ ai mere ilāh:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
Now till the final breath, my God, let this my tongue's one litany be:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
دونوں جہاں میں جو کچھ بھی ہے سب ہے تیرے زیرِ نگیں
جن و انس و حور و ملائک عرش و کرسی چرخ و زمیں
کون و مکاں میں لائقِ سجدہ تیرے سوائے نورِ مبیں
کوئی نہیں ہے کوئی نہیں ہے کوئی نہیں ہے کوئی نہیں
Donoñ jahāñ meñ jo kuchh bhī hai sab hai tere zer-e-nagīñ
Jinn-o-ins-o-hūr-o-malā'ik 'arsh-o-kursī charkh-o-zamīñ
Kaun-o-makāñ meñ lā'iq-e-sajda tere siwā'e nūr-e-mubīñ
Koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ
All in both worlds, whatever is, beneath Your signet-ring is bound:
Jinn and man, houri and angel, Throne and Footstool, sky and ground.
In all creation, worthy of prostration, save You, Radiant One,
There is none, there is none, there is none, there is none.
اب تو رہے بس تا دمِ آخر وردِ زباں اے میرے الٰہ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ
Ab to rahe bas tā dam-e-ākhir wird-e-zabāñ ai mere ilāh:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
Now till the final breath, my God, let this my tongue's one litany be:

سب بندے ہیں کوئی نبی ہو یا ہو ولی یا شہنشاہ
باغِ دو عالم بھی ہے تری قدرت کے حضور اک برگِ کاہ
کیوں نہ میں قائل ہوں کہ ہزاروں تیری خدائی کے ہیں گواہ
خار و گل افلاک و کواکب کوہ و دریا مہر و ماہ
Sab bande haiñ koī nabī ho yā ho walī yā shahanshāh
Bāgh-e-do-'ālam bhī hai terī qudrat ke huzūr ik barg-e-kāh
Kyoñ na maiñ qā'il hūñ ke hazāroñ terī khudā'ī ke haiñ gawāh
Khār-o-gul aflāk-o-kawākib koh-o-daryā mehr-o-māh
All are servants: prophet, saint, or king of kings, and none is more;
Both worlds' garden is one straw Your power's presence stands before.
How could I not confess it? Thousands testify You're God alone:
Thorn and rose, the spheres and stars, the peak, the sea, the sun and moon.
اب تو رہے بس تا دمِ آخر وردِ زباں اے میرے الٰہ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ
Ab to rahe bas tā dam-e-ākhir wird-e-zabāñ ai mere ilāh:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
Now till the final breath, my God, let this my tongue's one litany be:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
تیرا گدا بن کر میں کسی کا دستِ نگر اے شاہ نہ ہوں
بندۂ مال و زر نہ بنوں میں طالبِ عز و جاہ نہ ہوں
راہ پہ تیری پڑ کے قیامت تک میں کبھی بے راہ نہ ہوں
چین نہ لوں میں جب تک رازِ وحدت سے آگاہ نہ ہوں
Terā gadā ban kar maiñ kisī kā dast-e-nigar ai shāh na hūñ
Banda-e-māl-o-zar na banūñ maiñ tālib-e-'izz-o-jāh na hūñ
Rāh pe terī paṛ ke qiyāmat tak maiñ kabhī be-rāh na hūñ
Chain na lūñ maiñ jab tak rāz-e-wahdat se āgāh na hūñ
Your beggar made, may I, O King, hang on another's hand, not ever;
May I no slave to gold become, nor seek for rank and honour, ever;
Set on Your path, till Judgement Day may I not lose my way, not ever;
Till Oneness' secret I have learned, let me know rest not, ever.
اب تو رہے بس تا دمِ آخر وردِ زباں اے میرے الٰہ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ

یاد میں تیری سب کو بھلا دوں کوئی نہ مجھ کو یاد رہے
تجھ پر سب گھر بار لٹا دوں خانۂ دل آباد رہے
سب خوشیوں کو آگ لگا دوں غم سے ترے دل شاد رہے
سب کو نظر سے اپنی گرا دوں تجھ سے فقط فریاد رہے
Yād meñ terī sab ko bhulā dūñ koī na mujh ko yād rahe
Tujh par sab ghar bār luṭā dūñ khāna-e-dil ābād rahe
Sab khushiyoñ ko āg lagā dūñ gham se tere dil shād rahe
Sab ko nazar se apnī girā dūñ tujh se faqat faryād rahe
In Your remembrance let me forget all, till none in mind remain;
On You I'd squander house and home, that the heart's house may stand again.
All my joys I'd set ablaze, and in Your sorrow joy obtain;
All I'd let fall from my regard, and to You alone complain.
اب تو رہے بس تا دمِ آخر وردِ زباں اے میرے الٰہ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ
Ab to rahe bas tā dam-e-ākhir wird-e-zabāñ ai mere ilāh:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
Now till the final breath, my God, let this my tongue's one litany be:

سب سے میں ہو جاؤں مستغنی فضل ہو پیشِ نظر تیرا
اب تو رہوں میں اے میرے داتا بس اک دستِ نگر تیرا
توڑ کے پاؤں پڑ جاؤں چھوڑوں نہ کبھی اب در تیرا
عشق سما جائے رگ رگ میں دل میں میرے گھر تیرا
Sab se maiñ ho jā'ūñ mustaghnī fazl ho pesh-e-nazar terā
Ab to rahūñ maiñ ai mere dātā bas ik dast-e-nigar terā
Toṛ ke pā'oñ paṛ jā'ūñ chhoṛūñ na kabhī ab dar terā
'Ishq samā jā'e rag rag meñ dil meñ mere ghar terā
Free of all may I become: before my sight, that grace of Yours;
Let me now stay, O my Bestower, the one dependant, only Yours;
I'd break my legs and there lie down, and never leave this door of Yours;
Love fill my every vein; and in my heart let there be a home of Yours.
اب تو رہے بس تا دمِ آخر وردِ زباں اے میرے الٰہ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰہ
Ab to rahe bas tā dam-e-ākhir wird-e-zabāñ ai mere ilāh:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
Now till the final breath, my God, let this my tongue's one litany be:
Lā ilāha illa'llāh, lā ilāha illa'llāh.
نفس و شیطاں دونوں نے مل کر ہائے کیا ہے مجھ کو تباہ
اے میرے مولا میری مدد کر چاہتا ہوں میں تیری پناہ
مجھ سا خلق میں کوئی نہیں گو بدکار و نامہ سیاہ
تو بھی مگر غفار ہے یارب بخش دے میرے سارے گناہ
Nafs-o-shaitāñ donoñ ne mil kar hā'e kiyā hai mujh ko tabāh
Ai mere maulā merī madad kar chāhtā hūñ maiñ terī panāh
Mujh sā khalq meñ koī nahīñ go bad-kār-o-nāma-siyāh
Tū bhī magar ghaffār hai yā Rabb bakhsh de mere sāre gunāh
Self and Satan, both conspiring, ah, have brought me to my fall;
O my Master, help me: I beseech Your shelter, and on You I call.
None in creation is as wicked, with record black as night, like me;
But You, O Lord, are the Forgiver: forgive me all, and set me free.

مجھ کو سراپا ذکر بنا دے ذکر ترا اے میرے خدا
نکلے میرے ہر بنِ مو سے ذکر ترا اے میرے خدا
اب تو کبھی چھوڑے بھی نہ چھوٹے ذکر ترا اے میرے خدا
حلق سے نکلے سانس کے بدلے ذکر ترا اے میرے خدا
Mujh ko sarāpā zikr banā de zikr terā ai mere Khudā
Nikle mere har bun-e-mū se zikr terā ai mere Khudā
Ab to kabhī chhoṛe bhī na chhūṭe zikr terā ai mere Khudā
Halq se nikle sāñs ke badle zikr terā ai mere Khudā
Make me all remembrance, head to foot: Your remembrance, O my God.
From every pore of me let issue: Your remembrance, O my God.
Now let it not leave, though I would leave it: Your remembrance, O my God.
From my throat, in place of breath, come: Your remembrance, O my God.

جب تک قلب رہے پہلو میں جب تک تن میں جان رہے
لب پہ تیرا نام رہے اور دل میں تیرا دھیان رہے
جذب میں پرّاں ہوش رہیں اور عقل مری حیران رہے
لیکن تجھ سے غافل ہرگز دل نہ مرا اک آن رہے
Jab tak qalb rahe pahlū meñ jab tak tan meñ jān rahe
Lab pe terā nām rahe aur dil meñ terā dhyān rahe
Jazb meñ parrāñ hosh raheñ aur 'aql merī hairān rahe
Lekin tujh se ghāfil hargiz dil na merā ik ān rahe
So long as heart stays in my side, so long as life stays in this frame,
Upon my lips remain Your name, and in my heart Your thought the same.
In rapture let my senses fly, and reason stand in wonderment;
But never, from You, be my heart unmindful for a single moment.
اب تو رہے بس تا دمِ آخر وردِ زباں اے میرے الٰہ

جان ہوئی جاتی ہے شیریں کیسے مزے کا ذکر ہے واہ
Jān huī jātī hai shīrīñ kaise maze kā zikr hai wāh
My very soul is turning sweet. What savour this remembrance has. Ah!

- Where the two differ, the reading that scans better is used. Stanza VIII follows the photocopy in reading اے میرے مولا, where the Multan print has اے مولا. Stanza V omits an extra میں that the Multan print appears to have.
- The photocopy's footnote reads جان ہوتی جاتی ہے شیریں کیسے مزہ کا ذکر ہے واہ, with the same meaning.
Readings still uncertain
- I.4: ہوش رہے نہ is a reading of cramped print.
- X.3: پرّاں ("flying") is a reading; the print shows no doubling mark.
Translation choices
- The Arabic of the dhikr stays untranslated because it is what's being recited. Lā ilāha illa'llāh means "There is no god but Allah".
- Zikr is "remembrance". Tazmīn means weaving a set phrase into new verse, which is what the refrain does.
- Rhyme and metre added a few words, chiefly "none is more" (IV) and "set me free" (VIII). IV.4 reorders the list for rhyme.
- In the transliteration, ñ marks a nasal vowel, and a dot under a letter, as in ṛ and ṭ, marks the retroflex sound.
- The footnotes on the printed page are marked ن, which the page doesn't explain. They read like extra refrains for recitation, but that is an inference.
