Ai mere maulā merī nazar meñ tū hī tū ho tū hī tū

Sab to hoñ bāhar dil ke andar tū hī tū ho tū hī tū

Qalb-e-tapāñ meñ dīda-e-tar meñ tū hī tū ho tū hī tū

Mere liye to bahr-o-bar meñ tū hī tū ho tū hī tū

O my Master, in my gaze be only You, be only You.

Let all be outside; in my heart be only You, be only You.

In burning heart and tearful eye be only You, be only You.

For me, on land and on the sea, be only You, be only You.

Let me see nothing, never, though a hundred thousand sights be shown:

Illa'llāh illa'llāh, illa'llāh illa'llāh.

In gain and loss let me perceive You, only You, just only You.

Dearer to me than life itself: You, only You, yes, only You.

For whom I'd gladly bear all things: You, only You, yes, only You.

My one support in both the worlds: You, only You, yes, only You.

The boatman of my little boat: You, only You, yes, only You.

Jūd-o-karam kī shān gadā ko khul kar ab ai shāh dikhā

Qurb-e-khās 'atā farmā aiwāñ kī apne rāh dikhā

Jalwa ab to khule bandoñ hī bas ai mere māh dikhā

Now openly, O King, to this Your beggar, Your largesse show;

Bestow a special nearness; the way to Your own palace show;

Your splendour now, quite unconcealed, at last, O Moon of mine, show;

Lift the veil, and every hour, at every turn, Your radiance show.

Ā'e nazar zarra zarra meñ sāf terī qudrat mujh ko

'Ālam-e-kasrat bhī ho jā'e ā'īna-e-wahdat mujh ko

Bāgh-e-jahāñ meñ tū mahsūs ab ho misl-e-nikhat mujh ko

Mashq-e-tasawwur itnī baṛhī jalwat meñ bhī khalwat mujh ko

Let Your power clearly show in every atom, unto me.

Let the world of many too become the mirror of One, to me.

In the garden of the world, now, felt like fragrance be, to me.

So far has contemplation grown, in crowds is solitude to me.

Aisā samā jā merī nazar meñ jalwa terā dekhūñ har sū

So fill my sight, that every way I turn Your splendour I may view;

No absence, not one breath, but ever face to face I stand with You.

Let all the world's bazaar for me one desert of Hū stand, all through:

Be only You, be only You, be only You, be only You.

Zarra zarra qatra qatra ratb-o-yābis bahr-o-bar

Ek zabāñ ho kar ye sab ke sab dete haiñ terī khabar

Tere āge hech hai har shai tū hī hai sab se bartar

Every atom, every drop, moist and dry, the sea, the land,

Light and flame, faith and unfaith, good and evil, low and grand,

With one tongue, every one of these proclaims Your tidings, great and small;

Before You, all things count for nothing: You stand higher than them all.

Let all be equal in my sight, be he a beggar or a king;

Let me stand awed by none, however high his rank and glittering;

To Oneness' secret, O my Lord, my heart in full awareness bring;

Let garden, desert, mountain, straw, become for me the selfsame thing.

Banda-e-maqbūl apnā banā aur kar na kabhī mardūd mujhe

Bakhsh Khudāyā husn-e-khitām-o-'āqibat-e-mahmūd mujhe

Jalwa terā is taur se ho har lahza ab mashhūd mujhe

Tere siwā 'ālam meñ nazar ā'e na koī maujūd mujhe

Make me one of Your accepted; never be rejection for me;

Grant, my God, a goodly close, a praised and blessèd end for me;

Let Your splendour, at each moment, so be manifest to me,

That nothing else but You in all the world may seem to exist, to me.

Let me see nothing, never, though a hundred thousand sights be shown:

Footnote on the printed page

Koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ hai koī nahīñ hai koī ilāh

There is none, there is none, there is none: no god at all.

Notes

Source

  • Kashkol-e-Majzoob, Idara Talifat-e-Ashrafia, Multan, pp. 425–426. A photocopy of another printing has stanzas I–IV on p. 361; stanzas V–IX come from the Multan print alone.

Readings still uncertain

  • V.4: the print seems to read بڑھی ("has grown"). بڑھے ("may it grow") would fit the surrounding prayers better.
  • VI.3: میدان ہو is read as maidān-e-hū, "desert of Hū", because the stanza rhymes on -ū. Read as maidān ho, it would mean "be one empty field".
  • IX.3: ہو was supplied; the metre and sense need it, but the scan doesn't clearly show it.

Translation choices

  • Illa'llāh means "but Allah": the affirmation alone, without the opening negation.
  • Hū ("He") is both a dhikr of the Divine Name and an old word for a silent, empty waste, and maidān-e-hū holds both senses.
  • Rhyme and metre added a few words, chiefly "great and small" (VII) and "glittering" (VIII).
  • A pencil note on the photocopy glosses کھیون ہارا as کشتی بان, "boatman". A second pencil note near stanza II couldn't be read.
